The Long Story
AIRspace, located in the San Diego International Airport Terminal 2, is an immersive environment that represents abstractions of the San Diego regional ecology and topography. The space, designed by Jason Bruges Studio in London, educates visitors about the landforms, marine and avian life, and human presence in the San Diego habitat.

The room is divided into two distinct zones; the Topographical Landform and the Trajectory Chandelier. The contours of the Topographical Landform invite visitors to use the structure as a bench for relaxing, lounging, charging electronic devices, or for gazing up at the Trajectory Chandelier overhead. The topographic structure, constructed of over 30 layers of stacked plywood, has exposed end grain to further accentuate the stratigraphic layers.

Overhead hovers the Trajectory Chandelier; a 30' long suspended steel mesh structure that acts as a sculptural ceiling system. The swooped form of the system serves as a projection screen upon which real-time data flows in linear paths. As the data passes across the undulating mesh facade, the images take on an ethereal and fluid quality, further emphasizing the immersive feel of the room.
